🌊 Gulf of Mexico
The warm, clear waters of the Gulf offer world-class offshore fishing, island hopping, and open-water cruising. The Gulf's famously calm conditions — especially inshore — make it ideal for boats of all sizes. Anchor off a remote barrier island, snorkel the nearshore reefs, or head offshore for deep-sea fishing.
⛵ Charlotte Harbor
One of Florida's largest estuaries, Charlotte Harbor spans over 200 square miles of protected water between Cape Coral and Sarasota. Its shallow, nutrient-rich waters are a haven for snook, redfish, and tarpon — and its wide expanse is perfect for sailing. The harbor connects to the Peace and Myakka Rivers for extended inland exploration.
🛶 Caloosahatchee River
The Caloosahatchee flows west through Fort Myers to the Gulf, offering scenic river cruising past historic estates, mangrove shores, and the vibrant Fort Myers waterfront. The river connects to Lake Okeechobee and the Okeechobee Waterway, allowing cross-state passage from the Gulf to the Atlantic.
🌿 Ten Thousand Islands
On the southern edge of the region, the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most remote and pristine boating environments in North America. A maze of mangrove islands, shallow bays, and tidal creeks — best explored by kayak, canoe, or shallow-draft flats boat. World-class backcountry fishing and wildlife viewing.
🏝️ Pine Island Sound
The protected waters between Pine Island and the barrier islands — including Sanibel, Captiva, and Cayo Costa — form one of Florida's most scenic boating corridors. Cayo Costa State Park, accessible only by boat, offers pristine beaches, camping, and exceptional shelling. Dolphin sightings are almost guaranteed.
🚣 Intracoastal Waterway
The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway runs the length of Southwest Florida, providing a protected inside passage for powerboats and sailboats traveling along the coast. Perfect for cruisers making their way along the Gulf Coast with easy access to marinas, anchorages, and waterfront restaurants the entire route.

⚠️ Boating Safety
Southwest Florida waters are home to large manatee populations. Observe posted speed zones strictly — slow speed zones protect manatees year-round in many areas.
Afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly from May through October. Always check forecasts, watch for building clouds, and head to shore at the first sign of lightning.
Many SWFL waters are extremely shallow. Always check charts for sandbars and oyster bars, especially in Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor.
Florida requires all motorized vessels to be registered. Carry required safety equipment including life jackets, flares, fire extinguisher, and sound-producing device.
